Do the words beauty and running go together? Yes they do!
I like to wear make-up when I run, especially during races.
Part of the reason I run is to feel good about myself, inside and out.
When I get up in the morning and make an effort to present myself well I do it, not for the outside world but for ME.
I ran a half marathon last weekend and afterwards people said to me “Bridget you don’t look like you have even broken out into a sweat!”
- Now that I have much lower body fat I don’t seem to sweat as much.
- I push myself in races but ALWAYS run at a pace for 90% of the race when I can still chat. I like to enjoy my runs!
- I have experimented with lots of different make-up and have found the perfect routine, for me.
I want to share my top beauty essentials with you – then you can look your best in race photos!
Beauty Essential 1. – Foundation
I have experimented with so many foundations over the years and I now use a powder as a base all the time. I have acne-prone skin and a liquid/cream foundation just clogs up my pores.
My favourite: Bare Minerals Foundation powder
I have quite olive skin with a warm tone and I use a mixture of medium beige and medium, year round.
One pot of foundation lasts me around 5 months so is excellent value.
Bare minerals have stores and counters all around the world and their staff are excellent at picking the right colour for you. My favourite staff are at Selfridges, London where I bought my first ever pot!
Close second: MAC foundation powder
I once ran out of my Bare Minerals powder and bought this one at the airport. It is so close second and the only reason I didn’t put it as my favourite is that the pot is quite big and heavy. I like to run-commute to work and back and so it is too bulky to carry with me!
Beauty Essential 2. – Blusher
Blusher rocks. Blusher gives me cheek-bones!
It is particularly useful in the winter when my olive skin can look a bit grey – it also detracts from the dark circles under my eyes….
I have two favourites that I have used for years – have tried others but keep coming back to these winners
My favourite: Chanel blusher
Who doesn’t love Chanel Packaging??
I have tried a few colours in their blusher range but always come back to the same colour – Malice.
It has such long-lasting pigment that it even stays on during a hot and humid run. I have picked it as the winner as the container is small and compact and I can sling it in my make up bag and it doesn’t break.
Close second: NARS blusher
NARS blusher in Orgasm (I know right??!!) is a very close second. It comes second for the same reason as the foundation above. The packaging is not as sturdy if you are carrying it around with you – or running with it in your backpack. It is a great colour though and looks good on lots of different skin tones.
Beauty Essential 3. – Eyeliner
Eyeliner would have to be a beauty essential that I would sneak into a desert island challenge. I find it just opens and frames my eyes so well. I had a few disastrous attempts when trialing eyeliner for runners and ended up looking like a horror movie victim.
These are my top two:
My favourite: Lancome Kohl Pencil
I have had this pencil now for two years and it is STILL going strong. It doesn’t budge yet I can still remove it easily.
I don’t like the liquid eye liners as I find they can run when I sweat – this pencil is just perfect and comes in great colour pigments.
Close second: Boots No.7 Stay Perfect Eye Pencil
I recently discovered this eye pencil and am recommending it as it comes a close second to the Lancome one.
No.7 has a really excellent beauty range and I use a few of their skincare products too. I prefer the Lancome eyeliner as I find the black pigment is deeper but only very slightly!
Beauty Essential 4. – Mascara
Oh mascara how I love thee.
If there is ONE running essential beauty product that I could recommend it would be the perfect mascara.
If I have ever have a day (rare) not wearing it and go into work my staff ask me if I am ok… I just look half asleep without it!
I have tried running wearing many different makes and brands and struggled to narrow it down to just two….so I have put three here in order of preference.
My favourite: Lancome Hypnose Drama
I bought this mascara for my better half – the actress Kiara Jay. In fact performers are great people to get make-up and beauty advice from. They need make-up that lasts, looks great on stage and is both easy to apply and remove.
I don’t like running in waterproof mascara – it is a b*tch to remove and irritates my eyes.
This mascara is jet black, opens out the eyes beautifully and doesn’t clump. Winner!
Close second: Benefit They’re Real
Despite recommending the Lancome mascara this comes a very close second. When it first came out I rushed off to buy it and used it for several years. The only negatives are that it dries out faster than my Lancome favourite and I find it harder to remove. If you want a mascara that won’t budge though….this is for you!
Close third: Boots No.7 Midnight Lash
A lovely lady at my local Boots store swears by this mascara and she is in her 60’s and has tried ’em all. I really love that it is jet black, it goes on easily and lasts really well. If you live in the UK and can get one of their £5 off vouchers then save it and go buy this one!
Beauty Essential 5. – Lip Colour
I need lip colour, especially in the cold winter when my lips go a mixture of putty and pale blue! (Nice huh?)
I have tried lip gloss (doesn’t work when swigging out of a water bottle), lipstick (sticks to my teeth, not great in race photos!) and have settled on a lip crayon that works a treat!
My favourite: Revlon Colour Stay Matte Pencil
I am only recommending one lip product in this category as it’s the only thing that stays on my lips on a long run. It is matte, comes in beautiful colours and lasts for months. My lovely running friend in L.A. Stacey buys hers in Target and I get mine at Boots in the UK. She frequently recommends new colours to me and I have to stop myself buying them all. Highly recommended!
I hope this has given you reason to get creative with looking your best whilst running – some of you will look great without make up on but I love to brighten up my face and smile for the camera whilst racing!
Do you have any beauty products that you recommend? I would love to hear about them.
I can feel my wallet groaning already…..
